Hometown hero Michael Tyson.

Press release from Humboldt Bay Fire:

On August 3, 2021 Humboldt Bay Fire Engineer & Water Rescue Swimmer Michael Tyson saved a man’s life after he became unconscious in the waters of the Elk River Slough. HBF’s Water Rescue Team Coordinator called it a “legitimate save,” adding that without Swimmer Tyson’s actions, the patient would not have survived due to “the water temperature, the length of time he had been out there, and his previous medical conditions.”

Due to his efforts, Swimmer Tyson was honored in a virtual ceremony hosted by the American Red Cross on September 28, and received the Star of Life Award from the California Ambulance Association on October 19, 2021.

Humboldt Bay Fire is proud of the crews who responded that day, including both rescue swimmers who deployed, the Engineers who positioned the apparatus, the Captains who communicated needs, and the EMTs and paramedic who provided basic and advanced life support care outside of the water.

Thank you to the American Red Cross and the California Ambulance Association for the support shown to Swimmer Tyson and our organization. It remains our mission to serve our community with the highest level of care and dedication.
