With the troubling impacts of climate change becoming more apparent with each passing year, conservationist M. Sanjayan has embarked on an ambitious project to spend the next seven years chronicling the resulting challenges faced by various people groups and habitats around the globe. His findings will be presented as part of the new PBS series Changing Planet.
The first episode, which you can watch above, was released earlier this week and features several segments highlighting the efforts by local Yurok tribal members to preserve their way of life. Sanjayan’s visit to Yurok country takes him from the mouth of the Klamath River all the way up to Weitchpec as he speaks with Yurok experts about cultural burning practices, Trinity River watershed restoration projects and the long battle to remove dams to encourage salmon preservation.
