Press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office:

On June 27, 2022, at about 8:39 p.m., a community member contacted the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Emergency Communications Center to report a suspicious device discovered near the roadside on the 2100 block of Arbutus Street in the Cutten area.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team was dispatched to investigate. During this time, local residents were advised to stay indoors while deputies investigated.

Utilizing an EOD robot, deputies determined the suspicious object to be a large modified illegal firework. The device was retrieved, safely transported to a remote area and rendered safe.

There is no perceived threat to the public at this time.

With the Fourth of July approaching, the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office would like to remind the community that the only fireworks legal to use in California are those approved by the Office of the California State Fire Marshal, known as “Safe and Sane” fireworks. Please do not attempt to alter any firework device or attempt to make your own.
