David Nils Lindberg
Feb. 19, 1954 - July 31, 2025
David Nils Lindberg, age 71 of Eureka, passed away on July 31, 2025, as result of a motorcycle collision with a deer. He was born in Pittsburgh, Penn. to Olof and Theresa Lindberg. He also lived in Maryland before the family moved to California in 1966, then San Diego in 1968. He moved to Humboldt County to attend Humboldt State University, HSU, earning a Bachelor of Science in Geology in 1981. His career started as a field geologist on the North Slope of Alaska, multiple locations in the Northwest United States, Santa Barbara, and then back to Eureka to pursue his Masters degree at HSU. His professional career as a consulting geologist spanned 36 years. He worked with Laco Associates until 2016. He then established his own business, Lindberg Geologic Consulting.
Dave loved the outdoors and spent his youth camping, backpacking, and fishing. He worked for a time in Yosemite National Park where he met his life partner, Sylvia Bagley, and wed in 1976. Together they raised a son, Cody, and niece, Bernice Pogue. He learned to snowboard to keep up with Sylvia on the slopes. They were passionate about their snow trips and other travels, but especially their snow trips skiing Whistler, Mt. Bachelor, Mt. Shasta and Panorama as recently as 2025. He climbed Mount Whitney and Mt. Shasta. He enjoyed travelling the backroads of NorCal on his scooter, motorcycle and Baja Bug. He was a collector of gems and minerals and enjoyed panning for gold. Dogs were his other passion, and he was extremely proud of his Master Agility Championship with his border collie, Mongo. He was starting to develop a keen relationship with his 3-year-old border collie, Sheriff Bart, another talented agility dog.
Dave believed in community service and volunteered with Boy Scouts, Kiwanis, the Eureka Chamber of Commerce, the City of Eureka Appeals Board, Hum Dogs, Hum Bugs, Humboldt Business Tip Club, and the Redwood Region Economic Development Commission. He was the 3rd District Director for the Humboldt Municipal Water District at the time of his death. He was an impressively dedicated blood donor giving the gift of life to many, many strangers by donating over 56 gallons of blood and platelets.
Dave is survived by his wife Sylvia, son Cody (& Madison Laughlin) of Fort Collins, Colorado, mother Theresa Lindberg of Chula Vista, siblings Amy (& Brian) O’Loughlin of Bonita, Catherine Lindberg (& Cyrus Jones) of Pleasant Hill, OR, Elizabeth (& Sean) Keppeler of Fort Bragg, Mary (& Dave) Amituanai of Elk Grove, and Chris (& Jill) Lindberg of San Diego, 48 nieces and nephews to whom he was beloved “Uncle Gravy”, and his cherished dogs Mongo, Lili, and Bart. He was predeceased by his father, Olof.
In lieu of flowers, please donate blood, or give to the Northern California Community Blood Bank, Hum Dogs of Humbolt County, or the Lost Coast Kennel Club.
Rest — no, Ride in Peace, David.
A Celebration of Life is scheduled at the Wharfinger Grand Hall, in Eureka, on September 14th, at 2 p.m.
David posted this on his Facebook Page recently:
“I was asked why I became a geologist.
Grandfather was a coal miner.
As a young boy I was fascinated by the dinosaurs in the museum and collecting fossils by the lake. Then I collected shark teeth by the Chesapeake Bay and saw the mineral collection at the Smithsonian Institution in DC. We moved west in junior high, climbed Mount Lassen and the Cinder Cone. I backpacked in the glaciated wilderness is the Sierra Nevada. I climbed Mount Whitney. I collected tourmaline at the Himalaya mine in high school. Then I had to take a science in college and finally realized geology was my “thing”.
I’ve been a professional geologist since 1981 (except for grad school), and I’m still practicing and enjoying it.”
