David Alexander Moore was born in Palo Alto, California, to Jack Eugene Moore, Sr. and Evelyn Sarah Lightbody. He was a descendant of the pioneering Moore family, which arrived in California in October 1847 as the first party to follow the Donner Party.
David graduated from Arcata High School in 1962. Full of energy and ambition from an early age, he got his first “real job” at Shears Super Market in Sunny Brae.
Over the years, David built a life defined by hard work and determination. He bartended at Marino’s Club at night while managing Arthur Johnson’s Men’s Store in Arcata, and he even sold cars at Mid-City Motor World before joining the family business, Baker and Stanton Furniture. Later, striking out on his own, he founded Moore’s Sleep World. For many years he worked tirelessly to keep the store running, often making deliveries after hours to families throughout Humboldt County.
David served his country with pride in the California National Guard. Throughout his life, David was active in his community and found fellowship through the Southwest Rotary Club, the Elks Club, Native Sons of the Golden West, and as a friend of Bill W.
David had a lifelong love of cars and motorcycles. As a teenager, he treasured his 1955 Chevy Bel Air with a Corvette engine. In the 1960s, he enjoyed dirt bike racing on his Montesa La Cross motorcycle. He also loved music, especially singing karaoke, and was a member of the Christ Church choir.
Many will remember David as the “Mattress Man,” racing his Pinto for years at Redwood Acres in the Mini Stock class. Among his pit crew were Shaun Taylor and Casey Dungan, friendships he deeply cherished throughout the rest of his life.
David married Virginia Blankenship in 1971, and although their marriage later ended in divorce, it remained an important chapter in his life. He married Na Vy Chhun in 2018; while that marriage also came to an end, his connection with the Cambodian community continued to be a meaningful and positive part of his life.
David was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Wayne Pool; his former wife, Virginia; his sister, Carolyn Hunt; his brother-in-law, Richard Hunt; and his nephew, Brian J. Hunt.
He is survived by his brother, Jack Moore Jr.; his nephews, Dean Hunt (Dana) and Scott Hunt (Sandi); his niece, Cindi Hunt; dear friends Shaun Taylor, Mike Quirk, Joan Smith, Elizabeth Harper Lawson, Elene Stevens, and Don Smith; and numerous great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.
The family extends special thanks to his nephew Scott for looking after David’s financial and care needs, to all of his nieces and nephews for their love and assistance, and to Larona Farnum and the staff at Timber Ridge in Eureka, as well as Hospice of Humboldt, for their kindness and care.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on July 16 at Christ Episcopal Church, 1601 H Street in Eureka, with a reception to follow at Eureka Elks Lodge No. 652, 445 Herrick Ave., Eureka.
Memorial contributions may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, 1601 H Street, Eureka, CA 95501; Hospice of Humboldt, 3327 Timber Fall Court, Eureka, CA 95503; or a charity of your choosing.
