This morning, the Arcata Police Department and the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office swept H Street next to the Plaza and found evidence connected to gunshots that two people contacted APD about very early yesterday morning.
At 1:44 a.m., a caller near the Plaza said they’d heard shots fired and saw a black sedan flee the scene quickly, heading south towards Samoa Boulevard. A few minutes later, someone else called, saying they’d heard possible gunshots and people yelling for help near Greenwood Cemetery, at the end of J Street. Police swept the areas immediately and after the sun rose, APD officer Keith Altizer told the Outpost, but didn’t find any evidence. He said APD was unsure if the two callers had heard the same incident or two different ones. No one was injured.
Today, police expanded the search for evidence, briefly closing H Street between 8th and 9th streets at around 7:30 a.m. They found some, Altizer said. “I’m not going to go into what we found, but we just located evidence of gunshots,” he said. “People can piece together what it is.”
APD detectives are still investigating. Altizer asked anyone with information to contact APD detectives at 707-822-2428, or the anonymous tip line at 707-825-2587.
