Ballot propositions! What a chore! Sure, direct democracy is a wonderful thing, but sometimes it asks too much of us mere citizens. Many of these propositions are very boring! Others are more exciting … but what if they’re trying to trick us? As good citizens we have to go through them all one by one, spending hours upon hours reading and researching in our dark dens, until – best case scenario – we arrive at a solid-enough “yes” or “no” on this one or that. Or else we just throw up our hands and go by vibes.
No more.
This year, why not do it the fun way? That is: Join the Lost Coast Outpost and our friends at CalMatters for a boozy group study session on Thursday, October 15, at 6 p.m., inside the cozy North of Fourth bar in Old Town Eureka (207 Third Street)?
There will be free pizza.
Look: We speak from experience when we say that this is the most fun possible way to get your ballot proposition research done. Here’s how it went last time. People got their drinks, got their pizza, sat down at a table with old friends and brand new friends and hashed it all out. CalMatters’ Dan Hu came stocked with nonpartisan literature derived from the organization’s excellent biannual Voters’ Guide and showed a video on a particular proposition made by CalMatters’ multimedia team. Then the tables hashed out their ideas in little debates. Sometimes one table would get into an argument with the next table over. Then we moved on to the next proposition.
It was loud, raucous after-work fun. By far the most successful event we’ve ever had the honor to be a part of.
So, again, please place this on your calendar now:

Come say hi! See you there!
