On August 27, 2026 our dearest mother Janice “Toni” Carolie Mauney passed on peacefully into the next world. She is survived by her daughter Teelyn, her son Brad, her nieces Patty, Diane, and Lisa, her two sisters-in-law Pam and Rose and many cousins and friends. Toni was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Lynn, and her twin sisters Lorraine “Bee” and Mary “Jackie.”

When Toni graduated from Ferndale High School she left town and headed to the big city of San Francisco to pursue a degree in nursing. Though she was intimidated and terribly homesick she stuck it out, graduated as a registered nurse, and came back home to work at St. Joseph’s Hospital and later at Seaview Convalescent Hospital as the Director of Nursing. She loved to make her elderly patients laugh by doing high kicks outside their rooms in the hallway.

Toni loved animals, especially springer spaniels, chickens and all types of cats. She spent her time making her wonderful homemade bread and canning the various fruits and vegetables from the extensive family garden. An incredible candy maker, like her mother and sisters and niece, she would make all sorts of luscious homemade candy including toffee, creamy divinity rolls and even rocky road for kids who would come to her door at Halloween.

She loved laughing with her kids, family and friends. She loved watching her son play baseball, and spent hours bundled in the cold wind watching him play. In summertime, she would get up too early and head out with her family, mom and sisters to fish the beach in Petrolia or venture out on week long camping trips where she and her daughter would read novels checked out from the Ferndale Library while her son and husband would hunt for deer or fish in the Trinity Alps.

She was an active member of Saint Mary’s Episcopal Church in Ferndale for decades where she practiced her faith, played the keyboard, and reveled in the company of the church members, including Melinda, Sally, Pat, Willa and Michael. After church, she loved balancing the church accounts with her good friend Melinda while they would catch up and trade recipes as they worked.

At age 50 Toni started taking acoustic guitar lessons in Eureka. She bought a steel guitar. Then she bought an electric guitar and an amp. She stayed physically active, taking long daily walks and lifting weights at home. She loved skin care and enjoyed going to her various beauty appointments including getting her nails done, massages and deeply enjoyed everyone in Ferndale.

In the end of her life, she was cared for at home and then at the Ida Emerson Hospice House. She loved life and everyone loved her and her quiet yet funny way. During her stay in the Ida Emerson Hospice House she told the nurses that she used to do “high kicks” for her patients when she was a nurse in her younger years. The nurses thought this was the best thing they’ve heard and a few did high kicks for her. She died peacefully late at night with her son by her side at the Ida Barnett Hospice House.

She was an anchor for the family, and we miss her. A special thank you to all the staff at the Ida Emerson Hospice House. Thank you to the many caregivers who helped us when she was briefly at home, to the Ferndale Fire Department for their in person emergency help, to Tom and Crystal for keeping a watchful eye out, and to Melinda, Pam, Kristi and Linda for stopping by with prayers and support.

There will be a celebration of life at Ferndale City Hall from 5-6:30 on November 5 which would have been her 87th birthday. There will be a funeral at the Ferndale Cemetery at 11 a.m. on November 7. Those wishing to donate in her memory may make a donation to Hospice of Humboldt or Critters without Litters.
