From the Eureka Police Department:

Yesterday, the Eureka Police Department (EPD) responded to four injury traffic collisions, including a vehicle-versus-e-bike collision and a rollover in a 25 mph zone. Officers also responded to five reckless driving calls. This morning, officers have already responded to a vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision.

These incidents are a sobering reminder of how quickly things can go wrong on our roadways.

Through our recent Together, We Drive Change in Eureka community survey, nearly half of respondents asked for increased traffic enforcement. We hear you, we agree, and we’re taking action. EPD is on pace to conduct 10,000 traffic enforcement stops this year.

But here’s the reality: With only four to five patrol officers on duty at a time, we cannot be everywhere at once while also responding to calls for service. Enforcement is important, but it cannot prevent every collision. We need everyone to do their part.

Whether you drive, ride, or walk, help us make our roadways safer:

  • Slow down and drive for the conditions.
  • Turn on your headlights and make yourself visible.
  • Stay alert and watch your surroundings.
  • Look twice before turning and watch for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Put your cellphone away while driving.
  • Obey traffic signals, signs, and pedestrian crossing signals.
  • Never drink and drive.
  • Be patient, share the road, and give yourself extra time to get where you’re going.

Help us help you. Traffic safety is a team effort. Every decision matters, and every person on the roadway has a role to play.

Let’s work together to prevent avoidable injuries, protect lives, and make sure everyone gets home safely. Be part of the solution—not another statistic.
