A 19-year-old accused of murdering a 33-year-old in Hoopa last week has pleaded not guilty. Eric Marshall made this plea at an arraignment hearing yesterday, according to court records.

He’s accused of premeditated murder, with an allegation the murder occurred during a robbery. He faces two firearm enhancements that could add decades to a prison sentence, if he’s convicted.

The shooting was reported to police on August 25, at approximately 8:17 p.m. Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Deputies found a victim suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound near Big Hill Road and Marshall Lane in Hoopa.

The victim is Leonard Zakary Vanwormer, a Crescent City resident who died from injuries at the scene.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, detectives quickly identified two suspects after the shooting.

Marshall, a Hoopa resident who had an arrest warrant out for a separate case, was taken into custody without incident on Aug 27. The second suspect, a 17-year-old identified by the Sheriff’s Office, was booked into juvenile hall the next evening.

The court appointed the Public Defender’s Office to represent Marshall, who is held in the Humboldt County Correctional Facility without bail. The preliminary hearing was scheduled for October 14. 

Marshall has an open case in which he’s accused of second degree robbery, alongside a co-defendant. He similarly pleaded not guilty to these charges yesterday.
