One person died and another was injured in a solo rollover crash Monday evening on State Route 36.

A 2023 Hyundai Tucson with two occupants is believed to have driven off the road, hit an embankment and rolled over onto the highway, according to CHP’s preliminary report.

The passenger of the car succumbed to their injuries at the scene. The driver was taken to Redwood Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.

The car blocked the westbound lane after the crash.

The Hyundai was driving eastbound on the rural highway, roughly six miles east of the ongoing slide construction zone. The crash was reported to CHP around 5:30 p.m. around mile marker 25 near the Bridgeville area.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by CHP. Drugs or alcohol are not believed to be a factor.

CHP is withholding the identity of those involved, pending notification of their next of kin. Jason Esselman, public information officer for CHP Humboldt, said the occupants are from Mad River.

Esselman said the stretch of road was more dangerous in past years, but has become less so recently. He chalked this up to multiple construction zones reducing speed and additional enforcement.

He urged drivers to reduce speed, “especially with the rain predicted in the next couple days,” as well as to keep distractions away and to drink responsibly.
