An Arcata man, who was arrested by police two days in a row last week for allegedly breaking into the home of a woman he’s accused of stalking, has pleaded not guilty to a spread of serious charges against him.

Matthew Manago, 48, was charged with first-degree burglary with intent to commit murder, felony stalking, car theft and a second count of first-degree burglary on Friday. He’s also charged with disobeying a court order issued to protect the victim.

Manago was arrested twice last week. On September 15, police allegedly found him drunk and blocking a Eureka road in the victim’s stolen car.

After the first arrest, an emergency protective order was issued for the victim, according to a Eureka Police Department press release.

He was released after posting bail.

The next day, police found Manago inside the victim’s home, allegedly armed with a knife and bleeding from a self-inflicted wound. The victim was staying elsewhere because Manago had a pattern of coming to her residence and she feared for her safety, EPD said.

Police were called after a person retrieving the victim’s belongings saw the door unlocked. Officers found a substantial amount of blood inside.

“Officers subsequently located Manago, who was armed with a knife and appeared to be suffering from a self-inflicted injury,” according to EPD’s press release. “Officers were able to get Manago to disarm himself and he was taken into custody without further incident. Manago was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries.”

He remains incarcerated at the Humboldt County Correctional Facility, with a bail set at $150,000. A hearing to determine if Manago can be released on his own recognizance is scheduled for Tuesday. [UPDATE Sept. 24: The motion was denied, according to court records].

Manago has pleaded not guilty to all charges. The Public Defender’s Office was appointed to represent him, according to court minutes.

Investigators obtained multiple statements indicating Manago had expressed intent to kill the victim, according to EPD.

In a request for a temporary domestic violence restraining order, which was granted earlier this month, the person seeking the order describes similar, escalating actions by Manago in recent months — allegedly trying to get into her home, harassing her and telling family members he was thinking about killing her and himself.

He was additionally charged for a January DUI on Friday.
