A. Adopt Resolution No. 245-20 Declaring Results of the Municipal Election Held on November 5, 2024.


B. City Clerk to Swear-In Newly Elected Members of the Arcata City Council Pursuant to California Elections Code Section 10265.


C. 4563 : Elect a Mayor and Vice Mayor Pursuant to Arcata Municipal Code Section 2020.

The city council will be electing a new Mayor and Vice Mayor for a one-year term according to the Arcata Municipal Code. This is done annually on the Thursday after the second Wednesday in December. There is no financial impact associated with this decision.

(The City Council Chamber. The room is filled with council members, city officials, and members of the public. The Mayor, Janelle, sits at the head of the table, with the City Clerk, Rhea, seated next to her. The council members are gathered around the table, deep in discussion.)

JANELLE: (banging the gavel) Order, order. We will now proceed with the election of a new Mayor and Vice Mayor for the upcoming year. As per the Arcata Municipal Code, we are required to elect our new leaders at this time.

RHEA: (standing up) Thank you, Mayor. I will now open the floor for nominations. Do we have any nominations for the position of Mayor?

COUNCIL MEMBER 1: I nominate Councilwoman Meredith for the position of Mayor.

COUNCIL MEMBER 2: I second the nomination of Councilwoman Meredith.

JANELLE: Councilwoman Meredith has been nominated for the position of Mayor. Are there any other nominations? (silence) Hearing none, we will now proceed with the vote. All in favor of Councilwoman Meredith as the new Mayor, please say aye.

(All council members say “aye”)

JANELLE: All opposed? (silence) The motion carries. Congratulations, Councilwoman Meredith, you are the new Mayor of Arcata. (applause)

MEREDITH: (standing up) Thank you all for your vote of confidence. I am honored to serve as the new Mayor of our city. I promise to work tirelessly for the betterment of Arcata and its citizens.

JANELLE: (smiling) Thank you, Mayor Meredith. Now, do we have any nominations for the position of Vice Mayor?

COUNCIL MEMBER 3: I nominate Councilman James for the position of Vice Mayor.

COUNCIL MEMBER 4: I second the nomination of Councilman James.

JANELLE: Councilman James has been nominated for the position of Vice Mayor. Are there any other nominations? (silence) Hearing none, we will now proceed with the vote. All in favor of Councilman James as the new Vice Mayor, please say aye.

(All council members say “aye”)

JANELLE: All opposed? (silence) The motion carries. Congratulations, Councilman James, you are the new Vice Mayor of Arcata. (applause)

JAMES: (standing up) Thank you, Mayor and fellow council members. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as Vice Mayor. I look forward to working alongside Mayor Meredith to make Arcata a better place for all. Thank you.

(The council members applaud and the scene ends with the new Mayor and Vice Mayor taking their seats at the table.)

D. 4564 : Consider Council Member Assignments to Regional Boards, Committees, and Commissions, and as Liaisons for 2025.

The City Council is reviewing its assignments for members to represent the city on regional boards, committees, and commissions for the upcoming year. The council will decide whether to continue with current assignments or make new appointments. The representatives are responsible for attending meetings and reporting back to the council. This decision is based on member availability, experience, interest, and time served on the council. There is no budget impact with this action.
