In response to calls from local anti-war activists, the Eureka City Council will hold a special meeting on Monday to consider a resolution condemning the U.S. invasion of Venezuela. The resolution calls for “an immediate and unconditional end to any U.S. military occupation or control activities in Venezuela, including a withdrawal of U.S. armed forces from Venezuelan territory and internal affairs.”
A resolution condemning deadly airstrikes on alleged Venezuelan drug boats was placed on the council’s Dec. 16 agenda, but that meeting was canceled at the last minute due to a lack of quorum.
For some reason, the item didn’t make the cut for the council’s most recent agenda, prompting about a dozen activists with the Humboldt Anti-War Committee to show up to the Jan. 6 meeting and urge the council to approve a resolution as soon as possible.
The city’s resolution has been updated to include information about the recent U.S. military raid on Venezuela’s capital that led to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who are being held on federal drug trafficking charges at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York. Members of the United Nations’ Security Council described the raid as a violation of international law.
The proposed resolution calls for an immediate end to “ongoing U.S. military strikes” and the “occupation-like control of Venezuela,” emphasizing that the city “opposes any United States military presence, intervention, or de facto governance of Venezuela without explicit authorization from the United States Congress in compliance with the Constitution and the War Powers Resolution.”
The War Powers Resolution, passed by Congress in 1973, limits the president’s ability to initiate or escalate military actions abroad, and reinforces democratic checks and balances that prevent unauthorized or prolonged military engagement. The resolution requires the president to notify Congress within 48 hours of committing military action and prohibits armed forces from remaining for more than 60 days.
The city’s resolution urges the Trump administration to “pursue diplomatic, humanitarian, and multilateral strategies to address the political, economic, and humanitarian crises facing Venezuela and to avoid actions that may contribute to regional instability, civilian harm, or violations of international law.”
If the resolution is passed, the city clerk will forward copies of it to President Donald Trump, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, and other congressional representatives.

Detective Jack Steele was enjoying his morning coffee when he received a call from an old friend who worked for the Eureka City Council. Miles Slattery, the City Manager, sounded frantic on the phone.
“Jack, I need your help,” Miles said in a hushed tone.
“What’s going on, Miles?” Jack asked, his detective instincts kicking in.
“It’s about the resolution we’re presenting at the Council meeting tonight,” Miles explained. “It’s about opposing United States military involvement in Venezuela and expressing support for the War Powers Resolution.”
Jack raised an eyebrow. This was a controversial topic, and he knew it must be important if Miles was reaching out to him for help.
“I need you to investigate something for me,” Miles continued. “There have been rumors circulating that someone on the Council is being pressured to oppose the resolution. I need to know if there’s any truth to it.”
Jack nodded, already starting to form a plan in his mind. He knew he had to act quickly before the Council meeting that evening.
Arriving at City Hall, Jack discreetly observed the interactions between the Council members. As the meeting commenced, he noticed a tense atmosphere in the room. The resolution was brought up for discussion, and as each Council member gave their opinions, Jack sensed that something was amiss.
It wasn’t until Councilwoman Lisa Sanchez took the floor that Jack’s suspicions were confirmed. She hesitated before speaking, as if she was being careful with her words. Jack’s eyes narrowed, and he made a mental note to keep an eye on her.
After the meeting, Jack approached Lisa discreetly and asked to speak with her. In a quiet corner of City Hall, Jack confronted her about the rumors of potential coercion.
Lisa hesitated, but eventually confessed that she had been receiving threatening messages demanding that she oppose the resolution. Jack knew he had to act quickly to ensure her safety and uncover the truth behind the threats.
As Jack delved deeper into the investigation, he discovered a web of deceit and corruption that went far beyond what he had imagined. The resolution had touched a nerve with powerful individuals who were willing to go to extreme lengths to ensure it didn’t pass.
With the help of his trusted allies and some cunning detective work, Jack was able to uncover the mastermind behind the threats and bring them to justice. The resolution was ultimately passed, and the truth was finally revealed to the citizens of Eureka.
As Jack walked out of City Hall that evening, he knew that the case was far from over. But he also knew that he would stop at nothing to protect the city he loved and ensure that justice prevailed. And with that thought in mind, Jack Steele disappeared into the night, ready to face whatever challenges came his way.
