1. Eureka Woman's Club ADA Accessibility, Window and Fence Alterations

The Historic Preservation Commission is reviewing changes to the Eureka Woman’s Club building at 1531 J Street. The plan includes replacing the old ADA ramp, adding a door opener, changing two windows on the south side, fixing a trash area slab, and replacing a worn fence. Staff says the work should not hurt the building’s historic character because the new parts will match the old style and materials as much as possible. Since the project follows historic-preservation rules, staff recommends approving it and says it is exempt from CEQA environmental review.

… or, as a Pokemon duel!

The drizzle had just begun when the doors of the Historic Preservation Commission chamber opened, and with it came a battle over history, access, and careful change.

At one side of the room stood Alexandra Gonzalez, staff report in hand, speaking with the calm certainty of someone who had already walked every inch of 1531 J Street in her mind. “The project preserves the building’s character,” she said. “The proposed ramp, windows, and fence comply with the Standards.”

Across from her, DJ Cleek set down the applicant’s plans. “We’re not trying to erase the Eureka Woman’s Club,” he said. “We’re trying to keep it usable, safe, and respectful to the original design.”

Then, as if summoned by the tension in the room, a flash of red light burst from the screen at the center table.

“Pikachu!” cried a bright voice from the doorway.

Ash stepped in beside his partner, and the chamber seemed to become an arena all at once. “If preserving the past means making room for the future,” he said, “then let’s battle for it.”

The Commission Chair nodded gravely. “Begin.”

Alexandra sent out Steelix, its massive coils gleaming like structural beams. DJ answered with Gogoat, sturdy and weathered as old redwood. Ash chose Lucario, and from the opposing side a long-feathered Corviknight took the field, a guardian in black iron plumage.

“Steelix, Iron Tail!”

The ground shuddered as the attack struck, but Lucario jumped and countered with Aura Sphere, splitting the air in a blue flash.

“Gogoat, Horn Leech!” DJ called.

Vines lashed out, but Corviknight met them with a slicing Steel Wing, scattering leaves like shavings from a restored beam.

“The ramp must remain accessible!” Alexandra shouted.

“Then protect the landing!” Ash replied.

Lucario dashed forward, shielding Gogoat as Corviknight swooped low. With one final exchange, Pikachu leapt onto the table, discharged a thunderbolt into the air, and the lights flickered like applause.

Silence followed.

The Chair smiled. “The motion passes.”

Outside, rain glossed the windows of the Eureka Woman’s Club, and the old building stood unchanged in its dignity, ready for a new chapter without losing the one before it.
