UPDATE, 8:30 p.m.:

Hoopa Fire Department Chief Rod Mendes shares this update on his social media page:

At around 12:45 p.m. today, Hoopa fire responded to a vegetation fire at the intersection of upper and lower Mill Creek Roads.

Upon arrival, the fire was between structures burning at a fast rate of spread in thick grass and brush. The fire consumed an abandoned single wide mobile home, a small shed and several abandoned vehicles.

Mutual aid was requested while in route to the fire and were immediately dispatched before resources arrived on the fire.

The forward spread was stopped by ground troops with the assistance of a helicopter with a bucket and crew. Structure protection was immediately set up and in place while firefighters attacked with a hoselay.

Although the forward rate of spread was stopped, the interior burning continued and threatened multiple structures. Firefighters were able to hold the fire and no other structures or improvements were lost.

Resources included Hoopa Fire, USFS engines from Orleans and Lower Trinity RD, Unkonom Handcrew, Calfire helitack crew and helicopter 102, Hoopa VFD, Willow Creek VFD, Orleans VFD, and Salyer VFD.

Thank you everybody for a job well done.
