It’s quittin’ time, and you deserve a treat.

So kick back and let Humboldt’s premier dronist take you on a stunning tour of some of the county’s most iconic places and then ask yourself: What is the number one thing that is missing here? To me it’s the bluffs along the ocean on the road to Petrolia, but maybe you have a different answer.

How tall should Arcata build? | Screenshot

What is the ideal height for new buildings in Arcata’s proposed Gateway Area? Four stories? Six stories? Eight? Would your answer change if there were some community benefits offered as a trade-off, like increased open space for parks and trails in exchange for taller structures?

Members of Arcata’s planning department and the more civic-minded among us pondered these questions during a virtual webinar on Tuesday evening. The meeting centered around building height and form-based code.

What the hell is form-based code, you ask? City staff defines form-based code as “land development regulation that implements a plan with physical form as its organizing principle” which contains “objective standards, not guidelines or subjective requirements.”

Still doesn’t make sense? Check out the video below and Arcata’s fine planning staff will explain it to ya.

G. Mario Fernandez — a member of the board of trustees of Eureka City Schools and a current candidate for City Council — drops the Outpost a line to let us know that he’ll be having a campaign launch party this Saturday, Aug. 20, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Carson Park.

Free tacos are promised. Details at the link.

Like all well-meaning hoarders, LoCO sometimes finds itself scrolling through local Craigslist in search of… well, you never know what dumb thing you could clutter your life with!

Take these “[t]en free full-sized white paper maché redwood trees and removable redwood branches” for example! What could we do with those! The answer is, “Something!” Maybe LoCO will head to Arcata to pick them up! Or maybe you will beat us to them. Who can tell?!

… and since we have you here and you seem like the kind of person who likes free stuff, perhaps you’s be interested in another free pile we spotted in Old Town today (pictured below). First come, first serve.

Fortuna is still looking for Lewis Leckliter III, who went missing two weeks ago. Have you seen him? Pretty distinctive - he’s 6 feet tall and 180 pounds, and has tattoos, nose piercings and big muttonchops.

If you have any leads, contact the Fortuna police at (707) 725-7550 and ask for Detective Richardson.

TIP FOR VISITING FIREFIGHTERS: Eureka City Manager Miles Slattery lets the Outpost know that all visiting firefighters engaged on the Six Rivers Lightning Complex, many of whom are bivouacked at Redwood Acres, get free admission to the Zoo for the length of their stay. There are worse ways to spend your down time.

HCSO and Forest Service officers assigned to the SRF incident have detained a suspicious individual in the evacuation area off Seeley Macintosh Road

todd / 2:31 p.m.

Lightning Air Attack has just placed an order for 6 large air tankers (LATs) and 2 very large air tankers (VLATs) to the area of the Ammon Fire on the SRF Lightning Complex

todd / 2:25 p.m.

Local agencies responding in water tenders for the immediate need request from the SRF Lightning Complex are being asked to respond to the Willow Creek area to have their radios programmed with incident frequencies before responding to the reporting location on Friday Ridge. An air attack and lead plane are currently over the fire and a number of large type 1 helicopters are also working. Another aircraft just completed an infrared mapping mission. Air tankers are not in the area yet. The inversion has been holding late into the afternoon which has limited the use of aircraft due to poor visibility, but has also helped to moderate fire behavior. Conditions have been expected to change slightly today, potentially increasing fire behavior but also allowing more visibility for aircraft work. It sounds like fire is approaching the lines on Friday Ridge and Titlow

todd / 1:53 p.m.

SRF Lightning Complex request for immediate need water tenders to Friday Ridge Rd. at Titlow Hill; For Arcata Fire, Blue Lake Fire, Fieldbrook Fire, Kneeland Fire; Contact Branch 5 on incident frequency when on scene (This will be for the Ammon Fire. I believe firefighters have been putting in line in the Friday Ridge area in preparation for the fire reaching the ridge)

You know how the clothing sections at the Eureka Target have been a big, hot mess lately? Since Target is currently short-staffed, some local folks decided to take it upon themselves to tidy up the clothing tables and racks, and help make the Target shopping experience a little more enjoyable for their community.

After posting a message to Facebook calling for folks to help her clean up the Target, Michelle Bailey and her family spent a part of their Thursday night folding and hanging the clothes at Target. Several other women and kiddos joined too.

“It is so overwhelming walking through that store,” Bailey wrote on Facebook. “I can’t even imagine being an employee there right now. It would take about 30 people working non stop for a solid week to get Target back in order…”

The volunteers may not have not put the whole store back in order, but they did certainly make a dent in the mess.

Yesterday, in saying goodbye to one of our colleagues, we called Facebook a garbage social media platform. (One of many garbage social media platforms.)

We stand by this.

But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t bright spots. And one of the brightest spots, locally, is the Hoopa Office of Emergency Services. Hoopa OES puts out daily or sometimes twice- or thrice-daily short videos, often with beautiful shots of the Valley and always chock full of useful information.

Lately, with all the fires and smoke affecting the area, the office’s charismatic Frank Telles is in front of the camera most days with the daily smoke report. Today’s report can be found below.

Give Hoopa OES a follow! Nuniwhtsis-te!
