11:06 a.m.: A National Guard officer stands on the remains of a Forest Service road on the outskirts of the Yurok Reservation in #HumboldtCounty in mid-July. Knowing they were about to be raided, growers dug a series of 15-foot trenches in the road to delay the police. The #Californiadrought is threatening domestic water supplies on the reservation, as well as the tribe's #salmon fishery in the #KlamathRiver. So the Yurok are targeting #weed cultivation, which demands an enormous amount of water, often pollutes streams, and exacerbates crime on the reservation. But it's a controversial strategy: jobs are few and far between in #YurokCountry and many tribal members depend on revenue from #pot.
