1:07 p.m.: After working with the California Conservation Corps on their burn crew in the King Range Conservancy Area, we hopped in the bed of a crew mates pick up. Prepared with a sleeping bag and change of clothes. We rode on dirt roads unfit for most vehicles, deep into the wilderness. Finally, we rolled up to "Woodrat Flats." Their property is situated on a ridge line with a clear view between the mountains, straight to the ocean. Their family built their cabins in the late 60's here, in the wilderness, completely self sustained. Solar panels provide electricity, the creek is tapped into for water, and their toilet and shower is outside. Completely off the grid, they have three pet black bears and a huge garden and orchard. We stayed in their old surf shack and spent the evenings with them drinking really good beer and listening to their intriguing stories. We've come into contact with so many wonderful, intellectual, rowdy people (restoring our hope in humanity) and I'm entirely grateful for this time in my life where I get to wake up somewhere new everyday, unknowing of where the next day will take us.
