9:13 a.m.: I'm behind the Redwood Curtain for the first time since 1997, when I wrote my last story on the California timber wars for San Francisco magazine. Now I'm back in Humboldt County to report on the threat to the redwood ecosystem that has replaced Big Timber. Today's highlight was a private hike with a BLM forest ecologist, a ranger and a veteran environmentalist through the Headwaters Forest Reserve, whose 1,000-year-old, 300-feet-tall redwood trees still bear lines of blue paint marking them for the sawmill by their former owner, Pacific Lumber.
