3:41 p.m.: A nice tasting adventure of #leopoldgourmel #cognac . Three different ages or carats helping to define the changes in flavor that Cognac goes through as it ages. The first is the 10 carat Age du Fruit. While a well-made Cognac, it's more on the simple side, with a nose of apricot, red berry and a light sugar syrup. The palate is dry, smooth and medium in texture, light wood, simple syrup, peach and apricot dominate. The finish is short, the alcohol is present and there is more wood, pear and simple syrup. It's easy to drink, but not overly complex. The second - Age des Fleurs - 15 Carats has a more amber color, a light woodiness on the nose, along with caramel, raspberry, rose and bubblegum. The palate is richer, the alcohol is present and is of medium density, with caramel, rose petal, a lactic creaminess and some vanilla. The finish is long and smooth, balanced with caramel notes, lactic creaminess, coffee bitterness, wood and dustiness. A really nice, elegant, balanced well-made Cognac. The last of the trio is the Age des Epices -20 carats. It's color is darker and it's nose richer, showing notes of wood, caramel, vanilla, clove and nutmeg. The palate is rich, tasting of treacle, wood, vanilla, light lactic creaminess, clove and cardamom. Higher in proof, the heat is apparent on the long, dry finish. It's warming, spicy with and edge of vanilla and cream, cigar and treacle. This Cognac is a lot more complex, but tends toward extreme dryness. For my palate, the 15 carat Age des Fleurs is the most well rounded and easiest to sip neat, followed by the 20 carat and 10 carat. #humboldtcounty #cognacs #france #promenadeencognac #tastingadventure #torturedbythirst
