4:44 p.m.: I tried, but cannot seem to resist making a delicious, refreshing #cocktail. I recently read #bitters by #bradthomasparsons and bought a bottle of #feebrothers #whiskeybarrelagedbitters. I was looking for something to use these incredibly deep and complex flavorful bitters in. He has a recipe for a #Scuppernongsour in the book that seemed ready for a try. I had yet to make a cocktail using egg whites. I don't know if I was afraid of it or just had an aversion to trying it as an ingredient. We are often taught in America that raw or undercooked poultry products are taboo. Boy am I sad I waited! This drink had such a beautiful, rich mouthfeel and a brightness from the citrus and jelly. It's the kind of cocktail that is tough to sip because you just want to down the entire icy cold, smooth and citrusy thing in one drink. I didn't have #scuppernong jelly so used some #lewisandco #orangeblossom jelly. It calls for 2oz #bourbon (I used #oldforester100proof), 2 dashes Fee Brothers #whiskey barrel aged bitters, 3/4oz lemon juice, 1/2oz simple syrup and an egg white (#vitalfarms). Shake the cocktail dry (without ice) to incorporate everything and then add ice and shake until chilled. Double strain through a fine mesh into a coup glass and enjoy. This was an incredible, eye-opening cocktail that was my introduction to egg white including mixed drinks. #humboldtcounty #torturedbythirst #whisky #oldforester #brownforman #bradparsons #saturdaysipper

3:11 p.m.: Sitting here this morning deciding which interesting #cocktail to drink on this overcast #humboldtcounty #saturday, I wanted something dark and complex, with bitter and spicy tones. In contrast, and in honor of the #kentuckyderby I decided a #mintjulep was in order. In the early 1600's the julep was originally concocted as a cordial, something syrupy, as medicine and often non-alcoholic. In the 18th century the #julep was still a sugary, sweetened drink, sans-mint and featured such liquors as #brandy, #rum and #gin. In 1803 mint was finally added with the creation of the cocktail and the preferred spirits were mostly brandy, #cognac and rum. In 1850 the mint julep was in high fashion, especially in the south, and was popular at the Willard hotel in Washington DC. It had fallen out of favor and was often replaced by other cocktails until it's resurgence in the early 20th century. The Georgia and northern Virginia mint julep are primarily made with brandy (peach and regular). It is most popular now in #kentucky and is made with #bourbon. Our crisp and refreshing mint julep is made with #mintjulep from the garden, #woodfordreserve bourbon, #agavesyrup and a splash of soda water to lengthen the cocktail. It's incredibly refreshing and way too easy to drink.
