Bill and Livia Vanaver
A concert of music & dance with Bill & Livia Vanaver Tuesday evening, April 9, at 7:30 p.m.
Bill Vanaver & Livia Drapkin Vanaver, co-founders and artistic directors of The Vanaver Caravan Dance & Music Company (www.vanavercaravan.org) offer a rare evening of Americana and World Music at the Arcata Playhouse, featuring a variety of songs “From Woody Guthrie to the Balkans.”
Bill & Livia have collected and performed music and dance from around the US and the globe since 1971. For 40 years, they have toured extensively with their troupe of musicians and dancers to festivals, theatres, universities and in schools. In the 1960’s, Bill Vanaver was featured on the Elektra recording of “The Old Time Banjo Project.” He is the music director and composer for The Vanaver Caravan. Livia is a choreographer specializing in percussive and world dance traditions and incorporating these modes in original choreography.
The duo toured for the State Department in the 70’s and 80’s as Cultural Ambassadors of Good Will in Greece, Italy, Cyprus and Tunisia. During this time, Bill & Livia also performed in coffee houses and arts centers throughout the US, England and Scotland.
Bill & Livia will be sharing some of their favorite songs and music along with clog dancing, step dancing and Flamenco (with guest artist/Caravan dancer Marina Lopez). If you like a variety of banjo styles, rich Balkan harmonies, odd rhythms, unusual stringed and percussion instruments and songs from The Vanaver Caravan’s production, “Pastures of Plenty: Tribute to Woody Guthrie.”
Audience participation dancing led by Bill & Livia will follow the performance.
Tickets: $12 with a $2 discount for Humboldt Folklife Society members, $8 for students and seniors.
