Born in San Francisco, CA, accomplished bassist Bobby Vega began his professional career at age 15 with Bo Diddley. At age 16, he attained widespread attention for his distinctive picked and muted bass line on Sly Stone’s “I Get High On You” (from Sly’s 1975 album High On You). Since then he has contributed his soulful feel and incredibly dynamic playing to a long list of world-class artists. Bobby Vega has significantly contributed to the San Francisco’s rich musical heritage, and his resume reads like a who’s who of the Bay Area funk, soul, rock and world music. He is a master of pick style funk, a tone connoisseur, a professor of the groove and an incredible improviser! He is instrumental in laying down thick grooves as well as being a driving force in all his musical endeavors. As he has said “It’s not a ‘style’; it’s a “groove”. And this ain’t a “hobby” it’s my whole life.”

Bobby has worked with funk pioneers Sly Stone, Tower of Power and Cold Blood. He has also worked with Lee Oskar, Paul Butterfield, Billy Preston, Booker T., Etta James, Santana, Joan Baez, Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzman, Zigaboo Modeliste, Melvin Seals, Babatunde Olatunji, Kitaro, Ronnie Laws, Hubert Laws, Joe Satriani and others. In addition to his stellar career as a sideman, Bobby has been a member and co-founder of several of the Bay Area’s finest all-star collaborations. Including; Zero, KVHW, The Avalon All-Stars, Don’t Push The Clown. Bobby continues to work with long-time Zero and KVHW bandmate Steve Kimock to the delight of their long-time fans.

Originally acclaimed for his funky style, Bobby Vega’s reputation as a creative force has taken him to many musical arenas. With well over 100 albums to his credit, he is one of the most influential and respected bass players amongst other bassists in the world. An accomplished composer, Vega has collaborated on various movie soundtracks, including the documentary film, “Vietnam: A Television History” as well as the Francis Ford Coppola film, “One From The Heart”. And, he even composed music for the Sega video game, “Sonic The Hedgehog III”.

In 2007 Bass Player Magazine editor-in-chief Bill Leigh’s performance and interview of Bobby Vega is one of the most popular features in the history of bassplayer.tv. Indeed, readers voted it their favorite Bass Player TV video of 2007, and again in 2009. His wide array of technique, unique personality and sense of humor make him so well loved!

Bobby is starting what he calls the “second phase” of his life. It’s all about connecting, educating and being accessible. For the last few years Bobby worked as Professor at Warwick Bass Camp with some of the worlds best bass players in the world in his company! Teaching is something that just comes naturally to Vega. He is extremely generous with his time and shares his knowledge and experience with anyone who is curious. He is also one of the kindest and most hilarious people you will ever meet! 

Currently residing in Sonoma County, CA Bobby loves working at EMG pickups, spending time with his son, writing for Bass Player Magazine teaching Bass to his students!
