Devlan James Band
Devlan James is a Seattle based songwriter and musician. He lives on a houseboat and fantasizes about living in sunny weather when not playing his guitar.
Devlan James grew up in New York City, the youngest of five children. Music runs in his family. His paternal grandfather played the fiddle, banjo, and guitar, and an uncle was a concert violinist.
Devlan played his first live show in Staten Island, NY and was offered a recording deal by a company that was affiliated with the mob. Showing some common sense, he declined.
Not too long thereafter Devlan went west and landed in the great state of Oregon. There he wrote and recorded a single for Atlantic records that was included on a compilation album released as a promo by KZEL.
Devlan then decamped for the sunnier environs of California where he played guitar and bass in a number of bands including Elephant Gun, Color Zone, and the Hoovers. This led to a lot of session work, live performances on KUSF, and assorted other projects.
Ever restless, Devlan landed next in Seattle where he recorded with bands such as Banbury Cross and the Bouchards and performed in venues such as The Tractor in Seattle, Sullivan Hall in NYC, The Ark in Ann Arbor, and The Saint in Asbury Park while touring the US. He also began playing the drums, adding another instrument to his musical resume.
In 2010 Devlan started spending time in Nashville with the intention of meeting other musicians, listening to a lot of live music, and recording. Within a few months Devlan teamed up with guitarist Danny Parks (Amazing Rhythm Aces, Toby Keith) keyboardist Jimmy Wallace (Kenny Wayne Shepard Band), bassist Don Kerce (Aaron Neville) and drummer Paul Scholten (Brooks & Dunn).
Together this group recorded a number of new songs written by Devlan which became Devlan’s debut album “The Lookout”.
After “The Lookout” was released in September of 2012, Devlan formed a new band based in Seattle with James Howard on guitar, Scotty Harris on bass, Andrew Cloutier on drums, and David Close on keyboards. After a few well received live shows, this unit went into Earwig Studios in Seattle to record a new record. The result is “Mint Condition” the new album by the Devlan James Band.
