HSU Faculty Artist Series Welcome Concert

Fulkerson Recital Hall

Please join the Humboldt State University Music Faculty as they welcome back students, faculty, staff, and the greater Humboldt community for what has become a fine musical tradition, the Fall Semester Welcome Concert, on Saturday evening, September 14th at 5:00 p.m. in Fulkerson Recital Hall. This Faculty Artist Series concert is presented in the early evening so it can top off a relaxed day in town, on campus, or on the trail, or be the spring board for an evening’s festivities in Arcata. A nice variety of music awaits the audience for this semester’s concert, and the short pieces and movements will provide a rich sampling of music and fine local musicianship that will be satisfying and accessible to everyone in the audience. $15 General, $5 Child, $5 for HSU students with ID. Many favorite local performers will be included in the lineup, including pianists Daniela Mineva, Ryan McGaughey, Jennifer Heidmann, Yumi Watanabi-Weisman, who will use all eight of their hands on two pianos to play Andrew Paige’s “Octo-Paganini.” The Arcata Bay String Quartet, featuring violinists Cindy Moyer and Karen Davy, violist Sherry Hanson, and cellist Garrick Woods, will perform all four short movements of John Joubert’s Miniature String Quartet; soprano Elisabeth Harrington and guitarist Jennifer Trowbridge will perform the famous Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 by Heitor Villa-Lobos; and three traditional Klezmer folk tunes arranged by Bettina Ostermeier will be performed by Rachel Samet on voice and piano, and Paul Cummings on clarinet. Rounding out the repertoire will be music for solo classical guitar by Trowbridge; Moyer and McGaughey performing Levee Dance by the African-American neo-romantic composer and concert violinist Clarence Cameron White; and Piano Sonata 7 op. 64 by Alexander Scriabin, performed by McGaughey. The performers look forward to seeing the familiar faces of friends and fans, as well as sharing their work with new and curious audience members.
