HSU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Orchestra
Please join the Humboldt State University Department of Music for a great evening of instrumental music, featuring the Wind Ensemble and Jazz Orchestra, on Saturday, October 13th at 8:00 p.m. in Fulkerson Recital Hall. Conducted by Paul Cummings, the Wind Ensemble will open with a World War I era march by Kenneth Alford called “On the Quarter Deck,” followed by a lively suite of Hebrew folk songs called “Rikudim” composed by Jan Van der Roost, Percy Grainger’s popular “Children’s March,” a superb setting of the American folk song “Shenandoah” by Frank Ticheli, conducted by senior music education student Richard Rios, and “Mambo” from Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story. After a quick intermission to reset the stage, band leader Dan Aldag will present this year’s Jazz Orchestra, opening with “Moten Swing”, in the arrangement done by Ernie Wilkins for the Count Basie Orchestra in the late 1950s, featuring Max Marlowe on piano, Jesse Garate on tenor sax, and Andrew Henderson on trumpet. Next up is “Move”, composed by drummer Denzil Best, and best known from the recording made by Miles Davis’s “Birth of the Cool” band. This new arrangement is by Mike Tomaro, and features Andrew Henderson on trumpet. “Ryoanji”, by the British composer Graham Collier is inspired by the Japanese rock garden of the same name. It’s a free piece in which various members of the band represent the sand and rocks in the garden and an observer of the garden. To close out the set, two tunes have been collectively arranged by the band. “So What” is the classic Miles Davis composition from his landmark album Kind of Blue. The band is playing this entirely by ear, with no written music. “E’s Flat, Ah’s Flat, Too” was originally recorded by Charles Mingus on his album Blues and Roots. All of this music for $10 General, $5 Senior/Child, FREE for HSU students with ID.
