Ocean Night
Join us for May’s Ocean Night at Arcata Theater Lounge! This month we are screening In the Wake of Giants, Uprivers, and Fish People.
In the Wake of Giants, winner of three film festival awards, discusses how “Entanglement is a huge problem these days. The whales, dolphins and porpoises who get wrapped up in marine debris often perish as a result.”
Uprivers “is the story of two women fighting for what they love: their homeland and way of life. In the context of rampant transboundary mining, the stories of two indigenous women on either side of the Alaska / British Columbia border make a compelling, emotional argument for why our two nations should work together to protect our shared rivers.”
Fish People, Patagonia’s new documentary, is “tells the stories of a unique cast of characters who have dedicated their lives to the sea. From surfers and spearfishers to a former coal miner and a group of at-risk kids in San Francisco, it’s a film about the transformative effects of time spent in the ocean—and how we can leave our limitations behind to find deeper meaning in the saltwater wilderness that lies just beyond the shore.”
As always, there will be a wonderful raffle! $3 suggested donation and free to Surfrider/NEC/Baykeeper members. All proceeds go to Humboldt Surfrider, the NEC, and Humboldt Baykeeper. Thursdsay May 3. Doors at 6:30pm, films 7-9pm.
