Dr. Tyler Mitchell from the HSU Physics & Astronomy Department will give an informal lecture entitled
“The Diversity of Extrasolar Planets and the Implications for Life.”

Summary:
In 1995, technological advances allowed for the first detection of a planet that orbited a star other than our Sun, an extrasolar planet (exoplanet). This discovery ushered in an era of rapid development in the field of exoplanet detection. We now have confirmed detections of more than 750 exoplanets. These data revolutionized the theory of planet formation, which had remained relatively unchanged since it’s origin in the later half of the 18th century. The vast amount of data now available has provided insight into the likelihood of the formation of habitable planets like our own. I will discuss the various methods of exoplanet detection and the wide variety of planets that have been found using these methods. I will further discuss how these discoveries changed our understanding of planet formation. Lastly, I’ll briefly talk about astrobiology and what implications the large number of extrasolar planet detections have for the existence for life elsewhere in the universe.
