Manhood! What even is it? No one knows anymore! 

Or, rather, there is no broad societal consensus on what it is, here in the USA. Is a man a person who gets his way all the time … or else? Is he a thing to be feared? Or, conversely, is a man a person who nurtures, protects, stands tall for his community? 

Seems like they have the same conundrum in other parts of the world at this point in time, too. See this UK meme for an illustration:

In this year’s election, the question seems to be playing itself out in the vice-presidential matchup.

In one corner, an up-from-Appalachia Ivy league author who spent some time in the Silicon Valley venture capital trenches, who has attached himself, remora-like, to the most powerful fish in the sea, so that he may give voice to his scorn for childless women. You’ve been doing it wrong, and he’s telling you to shape up!

In the other corner: A social sciences teacher and defensive coordinator who gives you tips on how to fix your car, acts the ham and has dad jokes galore. Whoever you are, he seems to say, you’re doing just fine. He’s gonna mind his own damn business!
