Weed Feed: Las Vegas Airport is Latest to Offer Marijuana Disposal Bins, Carrying Pot on California Flights Still a Gray Area
The McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas is the latest U.S. airport to offer designated disposal bins where passengers can dump their pot before passing through security.
Merry Jane reports that 10 so called “amnesty boxes” were installed outside the airport’s terminals earlier this month following a city ordinance enacted in October which instructs airport police to cite any person found in possession of marijuana. The Las Vegas Review Journal reports that marijuana was banned within the airport by Clark County, Nevada’s Board of Commissioners to comply with federal law.

Amnesty boxes, which presumably offer a safe and legal way to dispose of marijuana, were also placed outside several Colorado airports in 2015.
In California meanwhile, TSA security agents reportedly aren’t all that concerned with marijuana. CNBC was told by a TSA spokesperson in December, that security agents are mostly looking for weapons and explosives. But if they do happen to find a passenger’s weed, any disciplinary action would have to be handled by local law enforcement.
“We’re really not in a place to do anything,” Sgt. Ray Kelly of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office told CNBC in regards to deputies working inside the Oakland airport.
Adults 21 and over can legally possess up to an ounce of marijuana in California, so you probably won’t be busted for flying with small amounts of weed as long as you’re not traveling somewhere with strict marijuana laws. However, bringing large amounts of pot onboard is probably still a bad idea.
Last year, a Humboldt County man was busted attempting to fly out of ACV with 12 pounds of pot in his checked baggage. The man was still allowed to board his flight, but all 12 pounds of his weed were confiscated and he faced possible criminal charges.
