We got hold of first-placer Jared Huffman at around 7 p.m., before the polls had closed. He spoke as a front-runner would speak — mostly looking forward to the future — and he reaffirmed his great love for the music of James Taylor:
Second-place finisher Dan Roberts goes on to challenge Huffman in the November general election. We caught up with him at about 11:30 p.m., and by then his place in the general seemed pretty secure. Roberts was positively giddy at having beaten back the Democratic contenders. Funnest interview of the night:
Norman Solomon, who was in third place and within striking distance of Roberts most of the night, checked in at about 9:30 p.m. He defended his attack mailers on Stacey Lawson and plumped again for a more progressive Democratic Party:
Susan Adams called from her party — held at a supporter’s private pinball palace in San Rafael — a little after 10 p.m. Though she didn’t quite want to throw in the towel, she seemed to be aware that her chances were not good. She was gracious in defeat and grateful to her Humboldt County supporters:
Humboldt County’s own Andy Caffrey was raging it up with fellow candidates William Courtney and John Lewellan on the Mendocino Coast when he checked in right before midnight. Your Lost Coast Outpost wanted to gloat a little bit, seeing that we had clearly won our bet with the candidate, but Caffrey was upbeat and on-point. Make it Eel River IPA, Andy!
