UPDATE 11:50 A.M.: Marty Messenger with Humboldt County Roads working in Southern Humboldt updated us that Briceland/Shelter Cove Roads have been sanded but Paradise Ridge is 32 degrees so be careful. Sand trucks are headed up Alderpoint but the effort to keep the major county roads is taking most of the time so less traveled county roads might not see road workers today.
Caltrans says 101 is clear. 299 chains or 4W required from 16 miles east of Blue Lake. Chains or snow tires required on 36 from 1 mile east of Bridgeville.
UPDATE 8:15 A.M.: 101 is open (See here for DJ Mike Dronkers’ travel) but there are a lot of accidents. Below is a screenshot of CHP:
Both sides of Hwy 101 on Humboldt County roads in Southern Humboldt are snowy, icy and treacherous. “We just have 28 degrees and snowing on Paradise Ridge,” says Marty Messenger of Humboldt Co. roads. “We’ve bladed it but we’re getting down to the ice. I’ve got one sand truck. The bridges are real treacherous. It is icy on Redwood Dr. between Garberville and Redway.”
UPDATE 6:40 A.M.: Black ice reported on Hwy 36.
“We got hammered,” said Marty Messenger of Humboldt County Roads at 6:15 A.M. this morning. “It’s snowy and still snowing.” He strongly encourages everyone to stay home if they can.
“We’ll be out en mass, ” he said about county road workers but the roads are dangerous.
Down below is what we know so far.
Ettersburg Rd. has been partially plowed but it is snowing and sticking as low as Ettersburg Junction.
Messenger is currently headed from Huckleberry Hill towards Shelter Cove with the plow.
He has a crew headed up Alderpoint.
At this time there are no restrictions on Hwy 101 (the road is open at Willits) however, Messenger says a crew member told him that it is snowing in Fortuna and icy all the way south towards Garberville. It is slick in places.
LoCO will keep this page updated throughout the day.
Be careful!
