This morning I spoke with Lori Dengler, Humboldt County’s premier earthquake expert, about the 8.2 earthquake that struck Chile yesterday and the tsunami that followed. This morning the tsunami is actually coming ashore, but it is only about 2 inches — not sizable enough to cause any damage.

Lori went into depth on how subduction zone quakes work and what we can expect here on the North Coast when the Cascadia Subduction Zone ruptures. The big thing to remember is that we only have about 10 minutes warning for a large tsunami in a Cascadia Subduction Zone quake. Chile is a wake up call for all of us on the North Coast. Be prepared, have a plan, practice.
