From the California Highway Patrol:

A young child pedestrian was struck by a vehicle on SR-96 in Hoopa and sustained major injuries.

On Friday, February 14, 2014, at approximately 1752 hours, a 2006 GMC pickup driven by David Drake of Hoopa was traveling southbound on SR-96 in the vicinity of Marshall Lane.  A male pedestrian, [REDACTED], age 5, traveling westbound, crossed into the path of the pickup on SR-96, and was struck.  The child sustained major injuries and was transported from the scene by ambulance to Mad River Community Hospital, and was later transported to Oakland Children’s Hospital.  Mr. Drake was restrained at the time of the collision, and was not injured.  DUI is not believed to be a factor in this collision, the cause of which remains under investigation.

The California Highway Patrol - Humboldt Area responded to the scene and is conducting the investigation.  Personnel from the Hoopa Valley Tribal Police Department, Hoopa Volunteer Fire Department, Hoopa Ambulance, and CalTrans also responded to the scene.  As a result of this collision, State Route 96 was completely closed, with an alternate route available, for the duration of this incident.
