From the California Highway Patrol:

On the evening of Tuesday, December 16, a pedestrian sustained major injuries after being struck by a passenger van traveling westbound on SR-36 outside of Fortuna.

On December 15, 2015, at 1800 hours, Deputies from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to an intoxicated pedestrian in Hydesville.  Before deputies could arrive, the pedestrian, later identified as 41-year-old Troy Lovergine of Fortuna, had walked west on SR-36.  At 1812 hours, Lovergine stepped out into the westbound lane of SR-36 directly into the path of a westbound Chrysler Town and Country minivan driven by 76-year-old Larry Doyle of Carlotta.  Doyle was unable to avoid colliding with Lovergine.

The impact caused major injuries to Lovergine including fractures to his legs and head trauma.  Lovergine was transported to Redwood Memorial Hospital in Fortuna.  None of the minivan occupants were injured.

All occupants were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the collision and DUI is not believed to be a factor.  The CHP Humboldt Area office is investigating this traffic collision.
