Data released by Humboldt County indicate that individuals under Post-Release Community Supervision were responsible for committing 63% of the felonies considered non-serious under Realignment between October 2011 and December 2012. Catherine Wong of the Times-Standard reports that Bodhi Tree, who was free under Post-Release Community Supervision, has been arrested for a double murder that left a high school senior dead. Tree was released from prison a month prior to the murders.

Another Humboldt County man, Wade Daniel Harris, was booked into county jail after brandishing a firearm and being in possession of stolen property while on Post-Release Community Supervision. Both crimes are considered non-serious under Realignment, meaning the most punishment Harris can receive is another short term in county jail. Humboldt County Sheriff Steve Knight called Harris a “problem child,” and cites multiple instances where he has been released from custody and continued to commit crimes in the community.

APD trying to stop a vehicle registered to Wade Harris. Reports were that speeds may have been up to 100 mph. I didn’t think we were going to catch up to a crash before he entered Eureka. Wrong way on a divided highway. We wanted to be there to stop this thing or the sooner we get there if a crash is involved the better.

APD had stopped chasing the car at this point. EPD dispatch. There hadn’t been an accident. We didn’t know where it was. EPD was working on it. We were happy that despite this person’s actions we’re glad that something tragic didn’t happen.  We responded immediately because of the possibility of a crash.

The budget a few years ago had a real impact on cities and counties and the state and those entities ability to hire good employees. We had a hard time keeping up with attrition. Highway Patrol is down on staffing. Hig Pat officers are stretched pretty thin. When someone decides to committ a crime against their community. They do it under the cloak of darkness. those crimes sometimes aren’t found until later. We train we work hard to polish our skills at policing. We are very successful but sometimes we dont [catch everyone.] 

I would like Mr. Harris to come to his senses and respect his community. 

We worked together to resolve that. HP sought hit and run charges against 

Filed report with DA’s office. Fleeing the scene. We showed up at the thing not knowing what occurred. Mr. Harris crashed into the woman and children.
