California Highway Patrol press release:
On January 16, 2015, at approximately 0420 hours, CHP Humboldt Communications Center received a call of a silver Subaru off the highway near US-101 and Airport Rd. in McKinleyville. The CHP, Arcata Fire, and Arcata Mad River Ambulance responded to the scene. Upon arrival, first responders found a solo silver Subaru, with a solo male driver, on the dirt embankment at the Airport Rd. underpass. Paramedics on scene determined that the driver was deceased. A preliminary investigation indicates that the Subaru was travelling on US-101 southbound when it left the road and travelled into the grass center divider. The Subaru continued in the center divider between northbound and southbound lanes, then travelled between the two freeway bridges, across Airport Rd., and struck the embankment on the south side of Airport Rd. The Humboldt County Coroner’s Office responded for the deceased. The release of the victim’s name is pending Coroner notifications.
