The U.S. Department of Education has awarded Humboldt State University $1.87 million to provide support services for first-generation and low-income students.
The federal grant will fund financial aid, academic tutoring, financial counseling and career advice in hopes of improving graduation and retention rates.
The grant will be spread out over the next five years, and will be administered through HSU’s Student Support Services program.
Eligible students can receive up to $1,500 a year in financial aid.
According to the Cal State University system, 70 percent of the nearly 338,000 CSU students who received financial aid last year had their tuition fees fully covered.
