Since 2009, ESPN The Magazine has cleverly invoked the argument that it is celebrating athleticism and the human body as an excuse to print photos of famous, carefully positioned naked people. Aha. Seeing zero flaws in their logic and reaffirming our commitment to informing y’all when notable people stand in close proximity to our picturesque Sequoias, LoCO feels it is our duty to inform you of some recent, sporty nudity that occurred behind the Redwood Curtain.
For its annual Body Issue, ESPN chose Humboldt as a backdrop for its profile of multiple-time Olympic archer Khatuna Lorig. According to Humboldt-Del Norte film commissioner Cassandra Hesseltine, the crew shot in both Pamplin Grove and at Ridgefield Events in Arcata in early June. (You can check out a behind-the-scene-ish video chronicling the creative process below.)
In the accompanying article, the 41-year-old Lorig discusses why she uses a heavier bow than most women, her love for America — she’s originally from the nation of Georgia — and how she taught Jennifer Lawrence how to shoot for The Hunger Games:
I taught her how to stand with the right posture, how to keep her chest down and hold up the bow after your shot and really follow through with the back. I had to give her a crash course every time I saw her. But she did great.
