Readers alert us to a serious accident that just occurred at the corner of Samoa Boulevard and I Street in Arcata.

According to a witness at the scene the Outpost spoke to via phone, a black Toyota truck hit a male pedestrian, estimated to be in his early 20s, “full-on” at roughly 40 miles per hour and then sped away. The victim was bleeding profusely when an ambulance arrived on scene mere minutes later to transport him to the hospital.

The Arcata Police Department was on scene and is investigating. According to LoCO‘s CHP Watch, the truck was last seen heading westbound on Samoa. We will update this post when we know more.

UPDATE, 8:30 p.m.: Several commenters note a black truck being stopped by law enforcement on the side of the road somewhere on the Samoa Bridges. The bit of scanner audio below alludes to such a stop. We put in a call to Arcata Police but were told by a dispatcher that anyone with any information was out in the field.
