Arcata Fire District press release:

Justin McDonald

The Arcata Fire District is pleased to announce that Assistant Chief Justin McDonald has been selected to fill the position of Fire Chief. He brings over 22 years of experience with the Arcata Fire District, starting as a Volunteer in 1994 and working at almost every position in the organization.

“I am very excited to be named Fire Chief. It has been a goal of mine since I started as a volunteer. I look forward to working with the district board, career staff and volunteers to meet the expectations of our community,” said Assistant Chief McDonald.

District Board Chair Linda Sundberg said, “We are very pleased to have Justin as our next Fire Chief. He has the skills and experience to do a great job and keep our District moving forward. We had great candidates to choose from and Justin really stood out in the process.”

McDonald will step into his new position in late June when current Chief Desmond Cowan retires after 30 years in the fire service. Chief Cowan expressed his confidence in the selection, “Justin is very smart and talented and it’s reassuring to know that the District will be in such good hands.”
