- TIMELINE: Sheriff’s Office Press Conference on Yesterday’s McKinleyville Standoff
###
Yesterday’s standoff between law enforcement and a McKinleyville man barricaded in his apartment ended violently earlier this morning, according to numerous reports.
The standoff began after the man — an approximately 55-year-old resident of Sutter Road — opened fire on Sheriff’s deputies with a rifle at about 9 a.m. yesterday morning. Law enforcement massed at the scene and opened negotiations with the subject, and for much of the afternoon it looked as though things would end peacefully.
But in the early morning hours it took a bad turn as the man started shooting out his window. He then set things in his apartment alight and came out his door with his weapon, opening fire on officers. They returned fire and the subject was killed.
Captain Kym Thompson of the Sheriff’s Office gave a statement to News Channel 3 at the scene:
More information will be released later in the day.
