Over the past couple weeks, California voters have been receiving their Official Voter Guides for the June 7 election, and while the presidential primary is eating up most of the headlines, there’s also a race to see who will replace retiring U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer, who is leaving the capitol after more than three decades in Congress.

The presumptive frontrunner is Kamala Harris, a rising political star currently serving as the state’s Attorney General. But the field is packed with challengers — 21 of them, in fact — and judging from their campaign statements many hold views way, way outside the Beltway.

Below we’ve presented eight particularly curious quotes from eight aspiring politicos. Some are clever; some are irreverent; and some are just plain befuddling.
