A Eureka woman accused of trying to bludgeon a Walgreens employee to death has been found mentally incompetent to stand trial.
Judge Joyce Hinrichs issued that ruling this morning on Errica Lee Stevens, who had been charged with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. Criminal proceedings have been suspended while Stevens, 40, is evaluated for treatment options. Hinrichs said anti-psychotic medication is one option.
On Nov. 2 Stevens reportedly went into the Walgreens store at Harris and Harrison and attacked an employee with a hammer. Bystanders pulled Stevens off. According to the police report, Stevens had been hitting the 21-year-old woman over the head. She was treated at St. Joseph Hospital for her injuries.
Hinrichs announced her ruling this morning after reviewing a psychiatric evaluation of Stevens’ mental fitness.
Stevens appeared today wearing a red jumpsuit and with her hands cuffed behind her back. According to court documents she had refused on at least one occasion to come to court.
She will remain in custody.
