The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office and allied agencies are swarming King Salmon at the moment, after two men allegedly fired on a group of children near the Bear River Rancheria and leading police on a high-speed chase up Highway 101.
Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Stacy Hanson tells the Outpost that the incident began when a group of six children on Bowie Lane, ages six to 10, reported that two men in a gold Chrysler fired three shots at them from an unknown weapon.
Law enforcement responded and followed the vehicle northward. It refused to yield. The men were speeding past Humboldt Hill at over 100 miles per hour before taking the King Salmon exit, where they ditched their car and fled on foot.
One man has been tracked down and taken into custody. The other is still at large, and police have set up a perimeter in an attempt to prevent his escape. Sheriff’s deputies and California Highway Patrol officers are spread out through the town.
The Outpost’s Andrew Goff, who is at the scene, tells us that police currently believe the other suspect is holed up in a trailer, which they have surrounded.
A Eureka Police Department K-9 unit is at the scene, and the Highway Patrol has a helicopter plane in the air, Hanson tells us. The King Salmon PG&E plant is on lockdown.
We’ll update when we know more.
