From the Reelect Maggie Fleming District Attorney in 2018 Committee:
Maggie Fleming will announce her candidacy for re-election to the office of Humboldt County District Attorney at 12:15 PM on Wednesday, September 27th in front of the Humboldt County Courthouse, 825 5th Street in Eureka.
Fleming was elected to her first term as District Attorney in June 2014 and took office in January 2015. In announcing her intention to run for a second term, she cited the record of the DA’s Office in her first term and pointed to accomplishments made possible through the implementation of changes she proposed three years ago.
According to Fleming, under her management and leadership, the DA’s Office has: effectively prosecuted thousands of cases; added seven new Deputy District Attorneys; successfully implemented vertical prosecution protocols to enable the same prosecutor and investigator and victim witness advocate to remain with the victim during criminal proceedings; eliminated the backlog of pending police reports and reduced the average age of cases; established weekly liaison meetings with other law enforcement agencies and professionals; improved efficiency and effectiveness by hiring and retaining skilled staff members; increased community outreach efforts to help address problems that can lead to criminal behavior; and improved consistency and efficiency by personally handling many charging decisions and trial assignments.
The public is invited to the campaign kick-off on Wednesday, when Fleming will formally declare her candidacy. She will be introduced by Lynne Soderberg, former Humboldt State University Chief of Police, and Zuretti Goosby, a retired legislative representative for the State Senate who is active on the boards of local organizations including the Humboldt Area Foundation, the Redwood Community Action Agency and the Humboldt Botanical Garden Foundation.
“I look forward to formally announcing my candidacy and asking the citizens of Humboldt to continue to allow me to serve them as their District Attorney,” said Fleming, “I am proud of the work our Office has done for Humboldt County and of the excellent team of staff, investigators and prosecutors we have assembled. I anticipate continued strengthening of our team as people gain experience and training. Everyone here recognizes our vital role in improving public safety and achieving justice. ”
“I have known Maggie for over 20 years. Her ethics, integrity and compassion are unsurpassed. She is a skillful prosecutor, knowledgeable mentor, and a humble friend,” Lynne Soderberg stated.
