The U.S. Forest Service is having a super sale on personal firewood-cutting permits for the Six Rivers National Forest starting January 1, 2020.

The Forest Service is slashing the price from $10 a cord to $2 a cord in hopes of encouraging more people to gather their own firewood and help reduce the amount of potential wildfire fuel building up in the forest.

Six Rivers National Forest Supervisor Ted McArthur has announced that effective January 1, 2020, the price per cord of personal use fuelwood on the Six Rivers National Forest will be reduced from $10 per cord to $2 per cord.

According to McArthur, “While we’ve been utilizing timber sale contracts, stewardship agreements, service contracts, and our fire and fuels staff, firewood gathering remains an effective tool in reducing hazardous fuel loading and roadside hazards.” He added, “This is a win-win for everyone—by reducing the cost, we hope to encourage more folks to get out and enjoy and use their public lands, all while helping us reduce the hazardous fuel buildup we have on the forest.”

Instead of getting two cords of wood for the $20-minimum purchase, persons will now get ten cords of personal use fuelwood for $20. The personal-fuelwood limit will remain at 10 cords per year. The new wood tags will be available at all forest offices January 2, 2020, and are good until December 31, 2020.
