Jurors began deliberating this afternoon on whether Demetrius Donald Coleman is the drive-by shooter who opened fire and killed Johnny Mack Renfro in August 2019 on a Rio Dell street.

Jurors were handed the case shortly after 3:30 p.m. and were expected to discuss the case until 4:15, returning to the courthouse tomorrow morning at 9:30. During closing arguments, Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Schaffer told the jury Coleman, who testified during the trial, presented an unbelievable “wild story” about hiding in the back seat of his own car as some imaginary person named Dread drove the car and shot Renfro.

Defense attorney Andrea Sullivan argued that Coleman was a “convenient defendant” for law enforcement. Sullivan said the police investigation was lax and prosecution witnesses were not credible. Coleman, 40, faces life in prison without possibility of parole if convicted of all charges.

The Outpost will publish a full story on closing arguments tomorrow morning.
