The two pit bulls that attacked a Myers Flat woman in late January, requiring amputation of much of the victim’s leg, were officially declared to be “vicious” at a hearing held this morning.
The dogs, which were being held at the Humboldt County Animal Shelter, have already been euthanized, according to Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Samantha Karges. Their owner — Don Mehrtens, also of Myers Flat — has been prohibited from owning any other dogs for three years.
Meanwhile, the victim Candis Danielson, has recently had to undergo additional amputation, according to the family’s messages on their GoFundMe page. Danielson’s right leg has now been amputated above the knee, writes sister Shiann Davis.
“We just love her so much and are so proud of her in this battle so far. If anyone can come out on top after this, it’s her,” Davis adds in a message to the Outpost. “I can’t say enough how much I appreciate everyone that has been supporting Candis and has been respectful of our family in this challenging time.”
